The thing that struck me most watching the comments on (Dutch) TV this morning was the startled expression on the faces of the commentators, the US specialists. Like rabbits in the headlights…..

Why so surprised? They can’t STILL believe in this concept of the American dream? Yes, Americans fought for independence, yes they designed an enlightened constitution and a modern (in the eighteenth century) democracy.

They helped save us, Europeans, from fascism and that is very very good. Then came the Americans as an example of our modern life: Consume, spread the MacDonalds everywhere. (But, hey, they get also so fat you wouldn’t believe it.)

At the same time, in the fifties, things were not so progressive internally– Mccarthy and the suppression, or maybe ask the native Americans, or the African Americans. And much later there were the atrocities overseas. Think Iran (the shah), think Vietnam, think the terrible deeds in the Middle East.

Many people in Western Europe have long been blind to the fact that there is that other side of this dream. The side that Native Americans, African Americans, Hispanic immigrants have to endure…

I do hope all the America specialists start getting an objective and rational view of this dream that is a nightmare for so many……

Many decades ago I used to think and hope that all the unstable states in middle and south America were different from North America. Coups and dictators were normal and now also they seem to have an essentially different political style than we have in Europe. Of course the instability was enhanced by the eternal interference of the US.

A few years ago, I started thinking: the foreign policy of the US is quite rogue… The reaction to 9/11 was completely disproportionate and resulted in the killing of thousands, maybe tens of thousands of innocent people in the Middle East. Internally, with the election of Trump, things started to get bleak. 300 of the by definition innocent children of illegal immigrants are still being kept in the US apart from their parents. African Americans are being so unequal as to be routinely killed by the police, apparently. And the culture of guns resulting in the killing of schoolclasses also belongs to a non European idea of civilisation. In this respect a comparison with Nigeria where schoolchildren are being disappeared by Muslim extremists, may be more apt than looking for similar phenomena in the rest of the Americas.

And today we see the mob occupying Parliament at a crucial moment of this ‘democracy’, a president on his way out trying to violently take power.

So, welcome at last to the rest of post colonial America USA…..

And this attempt at a coup that makes the US more American was not done by the large minority of Hispanic immigrants! No, the very late integration of the USA into the states that form America was accomplished, albeit very late, almost entirely by white American males of European descent.

Today I was told my cousin died yesterday. He fell in an accident on his motorbike. This sort of horrendous thing happens every day; fathers, sons and even as in this case grandfathers, die this way.

My question: Why on earth do we allow motorbikes at all? It is well-known that surgeons call bikers organ-donors. What’s not to like? The donors are mostly young and healthy and by dying the young ones give life to other people….

Motorbikes give a false sense of freedom; you are making a horrible noise, blowing dirty exhaust fumes into the air and you are a danger to yourself and others.

I am sure there are female bikers too, but can’t we grow up, as a world, act as if we are responsible adults and for once do something positive?

These days you can ride your bike online, please get on a clean normal bike, or a sordid safer car if you want to ride outside!!

Brief aan de Stentor van 16 mei naar aanleiding van de op handen zijnde kap van de beukenlanen die, surprise surprise, niet gepubliceerd is. Softe brieven mochten wel……

‘Sinds bladblazers worden ingezet om de grond om de beuken bij ’t Loo ‘schoon’ te krijgen, heb ik de ramp die zich nu blijkt te voltrekken, zien aankomen. De grond rondom bomen wordt zo hard als beton na geregeld bladblazen.
Beuken (en alle andere bomen) hebben luchtige humusrijke losse grond nodig boven hun wortels. Hun blad wordt zo ook gerecycled. Je hoeft maar door een beukenbos te lopen om te zien wat voor grond beuken nodig hebben.
De laatste jaren hebben de “beheerders” van de lanen blijkbaar gemerkt wat er mis was: Er waren opeens wat gehakselde beukenbladeren neergelegd in rijen op enige afstand van de bomen. Zo werkt dat dus niet: Eerst bladblazen, de boel weghalen en klein maken en weer een beetje terugleggen heeft geen zin.

Ik vind het onbegrijpelijk dat het beheer van dergelijke monumentale lanen blijkbaar in handen is van mensen die niets van bomen weten.’

Het leek me goed om weer lid te worden van Vogelbescherming, maar hun blad viel tegen…. Helaas moest ik dus meteen weer opzeggen.

Ik dacht, misschien is Vogelbescherming er zich inmiddels van bewust dat ze er zijn om vogels te beschermen. Laat ik maar weer eens lid worden (20 jaar geleden gaf ik de hoop op– u bood vliegreizen aan om vogels te gaan bekijken. Hoe vervuilend kun je zijn?). Ik sla dus mijn net gekregen vogelblad open. Het eerste dat ik zie is een garage- en autoreclame onder het mom van sponsorschap. Bij deze zeg ik mijn gloednieuwe abonnement maar weer op. Gaarne een schriftelijke bevestiging.
Ik wens u veel genoegen bij het verder vernietigen van de natuur, inclusief vogels.

Vogelbescherming werkt al jaren samen met bedrijven, maar toch staat dit onderwerp op een laag pitje. Omdat wij geen subsidies ontvangen is de bijdrage van onze leden en donateurs van zeer grote waarde, maar omdat we ambitieus zijn, willen we graag meer doen voor vogels dan dat mogelijk is met die bijdragen. Daarom kijken we zeker ook naar samenwerking met bedrijven. Uiteraard mogen de activiteiten van die bedrijven niet strijdig zijn met de doelstellingen van Vogelbescherming en moeten we een substantiële financiële bijdrage ontvangen. Uw argument tegen de Sterngroep is duidelijk en daar hebben wij natuurlijk ook over nagedacht. U ziet dat we ook samenwerken met Vesteda en de Nederlandse Golffederatie. Vesteda is actief in de vastgoedsector. Het bouwen van huizen gaat altijd ten koste van leefgebieden van vogels en dat is per definitie slecht voor vogels. Toch werken we samen om met Vesteda te zorgen dat meer huizen aangepast worden zodat vogels er kunnen broeden. Bovendien zorgen we samen voor een informatie doos voor nieuwe huurders zodat ze hun tuin vogelvriendelijker kunnen maken.
Golfterreinen nemen ook leefgebied van vogels in, maar met NGF werken we aan het vogelvriendelijker maken van golfterreinen en het bijbrengen van meer natuurbesef bij de spelers.
Met Stern is de samenwerking iets anders. Stern draagt al jaren financieel bij aan beschermingsprojecten voor de sterns in ons land, zoals de aanleg en onderhoud van broedeilandjes.
Veel bedrijven hebben programma’s in het kader van Maatschappelijk Verantwoord Ondernemen. In veel gevallen kun je dit denk ik zien als “iets terug doen voor de maatschappij” om de negatieve effecten van het bedrijf enigszins te compenseren. Dan kijkt Vogelbescherming graag hoe we kunnen samenwerken op zo’n manier dat vogels er profijt van hebben. Uiteraard binnen kaders, al zijn die niet heel strak te formuleren en wordt per bedrijf een afweging gemaakt.
Ik hoop u hiermee enig inzicht gegeven te hebben in onze afwegingen, maar hoop ook duidelijk te hebben gemaakt dat deze afwegingen meestal lastig zijn.
Ik vind het erg spijtig dat de samenwerking met Stern voor u aanleiding is uw lidmaatschap te beëindigen. Ik heb dat per vandaag in onze administratie verwerkt. Toch dank ik u voor uw interesse in ons werk.

I wonder; is the white house like a cruise ship, a care home or even an aircraft carrier?

A few days ago we could read in The Guardian, that in these times of lockdown people dream more than usual. Or, as is always the case when dreaming is mentioned, remember more of their dreams. Or, as I always think in discussions about this, ‘a bit of both’.

Apparently a recurring theme many people have in their dreams at the moment are plagues of insects. This could of course have something to do with their biblical memories. We seem to live in a time of disasters, and who hasn’t heard of the plagues of Egypt.

On the other hand we see severe plagues of locusts scourging East Africa these months.

I am convinced there is a more direct link to what we are, even if only unconsciously, experiencing at the moment.

We, humans, have devastated the earth like plagues of locusts devastate the landscape they travel through….

On small scale one can see that when we look at a busy beach after a summer’s day, a field after a pop festival, or even just a shopping area on a Saturday evening before the swift and silent cleaning up afterwards. We’re civilised, places must look never scourged after we’ve left!

On a large scale we can see this everywhere : motorways, industrial agriculture, towns consisting of glass and concrete, ski slopes, ports, the recently fast growing business areas, airports that get vaster and vaster, gigantic mines now occurring in the remotest parts of our earth, and that’s not all.

These are only part of the landscape where we behave like a plague, we do it wherever we go. Which is all over the planet by now. These places may look ordered and tidy and ‘good’ to us, but for the natural biodiversity of our planet they are lethal. Since unfortunately we are also dependant on a reasonably diverse planet, we seem to be committing suicide here as corona, but also earlier unprecedented fires and floods in all corners of earth, show.

This unwittingly devastating locust like behaviour seems now to break out into our collective unconsciousness—– hence the dreams of plagues of insects.

These dreams are about us.

Can’t anybody in the US do a von Stauffenberg on Trump with a bigger bag? What must happen before somebody takes action? You can do Kennedy’s, Martin Luther King and thousands of schoolchildren.

What on earth is stopping you??

Is China gaan experimenteren met corona achtige virussen in Wuhan vlak bij de beruchte dierenmarkt om een middel te hebben om de Oeigoeren kwestie op te lossen? De Han Chinezen willen de Oeigoeren weghebben. Een culturele traditie die ook ons Westerlingen niet vreemd is, zie bijvoorbeeld Joden en Sinti in WO 2.

We zijn nu wel zover geglobaliseerd, dat een ‘beschaafd ‘ land zoiets na de Shoah niet niet meer kan maken. Fabrieksachtige moorden van ‘de ander’ zijn uit. Dat doen we niet meer, ook niet in China, zelfs niet als je een totaal andere politieke, esthetische en ook sociale geschiedenis en cultuur hebt.

Het zou dus kunnen zijn dat men de Oeigoeren wilde endlösen zonder dat iemand schuld had. Met een virus dat vooral effectief was in kampen. Of op cruise schepen, of in bejaardentehuizen of vliegdekschepen. Tenslotte zijn dit allemaal een soort kampen.

Helaas ging er iets mis met dit geniale plan zoals we inmiddels weten … Weet iemand of het oorspronkelijke plan inmiddels met succes is afgesloten?
